Reading the contract before you sign

A copier lease is a finance agreement plus a service agreement, and the trouble is usually in the second half.

  • Check the term. Sixty months on a machine rated for thirty-six is a red flag.
  • Look for automatic renewal clauses and the notice window to cancel.
  • Understand minimum monthly page commitments and overage rates.
  • Ask what happens to the service rate at renewal — escalators of 10% a year are common.
  • Confirm who pays return shipping at end of term.
  • Price the outright purchase plus independent service as a comparison.

For many small Sugar Land offices, buying a solid refurbished MFP and paying per-visit service is dramatically cheaper over five years.
